Small Coins, Big Value: The World’s 11 Most Valuable Coin

Rare coin collectors know the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle. These were created from 1907 to 1933, but the gold recall of 1933 forced many people to turn in these coins for paper money. Many are still in existence, but 1933 is the most sought-after example, selling for $18,900,000 in 2021 or $20,212,100 in 2023.

The first US silver dollar was the 1794–1795 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar. One unique specimen from the first batches in 1794 sold for $10,016,875, or $13,311,850 in 2023 dollars, in 2010.

Ephraim Brasher, one of George Washington's neighbors, created the 1787 Brasher Doubloon, the first gold piece made in the US. One of the most valuable rare coins, it sold for $9.36 million in 2021, or $10,009,500 in 2023.

Pocket change remains a valued currency after 600 years. The 1343 Edward III Florin, or Double Leopard, is one of few million-dollar coins. After two 1343 examples were found in 1857, an English metal-detector user unearthed a third, which sold at auction for £460,000 and is today worth $6,816,000.

Now blow away US history with the 723 AD Umayyad gold dinar. About a dozen of these 1,300-year-old artifacts are known to exist. One of the most precious foreign coins, it reads Mine of the Commander of the Faithful in the Hijaz. The last sale was £3.72 million in 2019, or $5,418,400 in 2023.

This novelty coin, weighing 220 pounds, is one of collectors' most prized. The Guinness Book of World Records calls it the largest gold coin. One of six enormous and rare coins sold for €3.7 million in 2010, or $5,315,400 in 2023 dollars.

According to US mint records, these valuable coins do not exist. However, five 1913 Liberty Head V Nickels persist, even though the Indian Head nickel succeeded it. Most recently, it sold for $4,560,000 in 2018, or $5,262,100 in 2023.

Who doesn't like mysteries? That's why the 1894-S Barber Dime, one of the rarest coins, is so popular. Only 24 were minted, and only 9 remain. Just 24? Why? Perhaps due to a bookkeeping error or as gifts to famous bankers. The sales price was $1,997,500 in 2016 or $2,412,200 in 2023, despite endless reports.

Due to World War II copper and nickel shortages, most 1943 pennies were steel. One batch accidentally contained copper, and experts estimate 20–40 remain. A rare 1943-D PCGS MS64 Brown sold for $1,750,000 in 2010, or $2,325,200 currently.

Rare coin lists may exclude this. Many Morgan Silver Dollars from 1878 to 1904 and 1921 are still the most expensive coins on eBay, selling for thousands. The most expensive were 1893 coins, of which only 100,000 were made and many were lost or melted. Today, analysts value a great one at $551,272.

Finding minor variations might yield buckets of gold while searching for unique collectibles. One Cheerios dollar. A US Mint effort included Sacagawea dollar coins in 5,500 Cheerios boxes in 2000. However, 60 to 70 of these have improved tail feathers and sell for $5,000 to $25,058, depending on grade.
