A hybrid with the desired traits is called a cultivar. To preserve its new characteristic, the cultivar can only be cloned by cuttings, grafting, or tissue culture. Growing identical plants from cultivar seeds frequently results in a plant that reverts to one of the parents or something else.

A cultivar is a plant developed from a stem cutting, grafting, or tissue culture to retain its parent's traits. Growing a plant from one of these seeds may not generate the same plant.

The cultivar name follows the genus and species names with its initial letter capitalized in the entire scientific name. Cultivar names are commonly enclosed in single quotation marks. Identifying plants this method provides more plant traits than naming the genus and species.
